Past-Life Regression vs. QHHT: What's the Difference?

· by Dodie Kendall

I get this question often, and the short answer is: they overlap, but they’re not the same thing. If you’ve read about past-life regression and are wondering whether QHHT is just a rebrand, this post is for you.

Where past-life regression comes from

Past-life regression is the older modality. Therapists like Brian Weiss popularized it in clinical settings starting in the 1980s, particularly his book Many Lives, Many Masters, which documented sessions where his patient began describing detailed past-life memories under hypnosis. The technique is straightforward in concept: guide the client into a relaxed hypnotic state, then prompt them to “go back to a lifetime that’s relevant to what you’re working on now.”

It’s effective for what it does. People do surface what feel like memories from other lifetimes, and they often report meaningful relief from patterns those memories help explain.

But past-life regression is focused on past-life material. The lens is narrow on purpose.

Where QHHT comes from

QHHT, Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, was developed by Dolores Cannon over more than four decades, starting in the late 1960s. Cannon was working with regression clients in the conventional sense when she started noticing something. Her clients weren’t only describing past lives. They were describing a part of themselves that seemed to know far more than the regression questions were asking for. They were describing what she eventually called the Subconscious, though it’s worth noting she meant something different from the Freudian sense of that word. In QHHT, the Subconscious is closer to what other traditions call the Higher Self, the Holy Spirit, or the soul-level intelligence that’s been with you the whole time.

Cannon spent decades refining a protocol for talking with that part directly. QHHT is what she landed on.

The practical difference

Both modalities use hypnosis. Both can surface past-life material. Both can be deeply healing.

What’s different is the framework for the conversation. Past-life regression asks: “What past life is relevant to what you’re working on?”, and goes there.

QHHT asks: “What does your Subconscious, the deepest part of you, want you to know about anything you choose to bring it?”, and goes wherever that leads. Past lives are one common destination. So is information about your body, your relationships, your purpose, decisions you’re trying to make, and the patterns that have been running for years without you understanding why.

Put another way: past-life regression is a focused lens on one chapter of the soul’s history. QHHT is a conversation with the librarian of the whole archive.

When past-life regression might be the better fit

If you have a very specific past-life curiosity, say, an unexplained phobia or affinity that you suspect has roots in a prior lifetime, a focused past-life regression session might be the cleaner instrument.

When QHHT might be the better fit

If you’re sitting with a constellation of questions about your current life, Why does this keep happening? What’s my purpose? Why does my body do this? What am I missing?, and you want a single conversation that can address all of them from the same vantage point, QHHT is probably what you want.

Both are complementary, not medical

Worth saying clearly: neither modality is a substitute for medical or psychological care. QHHT and past-life regression are practices for self-discovery and personal insight. If you’re working through trauma, please partner with a licensed clinician. These tools can support that work but never replace it.

If you’re curious

I offer QHHT sessions in person at my Stuart, FL studio. Plan for about five hours together. If a session feels right, you can book here. If you want to talk through whether it’s a good fit for what you’re working on, send me a note.
